Gratitude
How to say thank you in Hindi
Hindi thanks are lighter than English ones. Between close family, saying धन्यवाद out loud for a cup of chai can feel weirdly formal, like thanking your mom for dinner. Here's what actually gets said.
The textbook one
धन्यवाद
dhanyavaad
Thank you (formal, respectful, a little literary).
बहुत-बहुत धन्यवाद
bahut-bahut dhanyavaad
Thank you so much.
What people actually say
शुक्रिया
shukriya
Thanks (warmer, everyday). From Urdu, widely used.
थैंक्स
thanks
Thanks. Yes, in English. Very common in cities and among friends.
मेहरबानी
meherbaani
A kindness / much appreciated (older, gentle).
To in-laws or elders
बहुत-बहुत धन्यवाद, आंटी
bahut-bahut dhanyavaad, aunty
Thank you so much, auntie.
आपका बहुत शुक्रिया
aapka bahut shukriya
Thank you so much (to you). Warm and respectful.
When to skip "thank you" entirely
In close family, over-thanking can feel distant. A big smile, "बहुत अच्छा है" (bahut achha hai, this is really good), or "मज़ा आ गया" (mazaa aa gaya, I loved it) often works better than a formal dhanyavaad. Save धन्यवाद for the first meeting, gifts, and clear favors.
Pronunciation notes
dhanyavaad: the dh is aspirated, one puff of air. It's not "danyavaad".
shukriya: sh, oo, kri, ya. The r is a light tap, not a rolled r.
