How to say I love you in Hindi
Hindi has more than one way to say it. The pronoun changes with gender, and the verb changes with who is speaking. Here are the five that actually get used, and what each one carries.
The classic
मैं तुमसे प्यार करता हूँ
main tumse pyaar karta hoon
I love you (male speaker to anyone close).
मैं तुमसे प्यार करती हूँ
main tumse pyaar karti hoon
I love you (female speaker to anyone close).
The verb ending changes: karta for a male speaker, karti for a female speaker. Same for other verbs in the present tense.
Softer, less declarative
तुम मुझे बहुत पसंद हो
tum mujhe bahut pasand ho
I really like you / I'm really into you.
मुझे तुम्हारी याद आती है
mujhe tumhaari yaad aati hai
I miss you.
Playful
तू मेरी जान है
tu meri jaan hai
You're my life (very close, almost sing-songy).
ऐ मेरे दिल
ae mere dil
Oh my heart (film-song style, playful).
Grammar note that matters
tum vs aap vs tu. With a partner, तुम (tum) is standard. आप (aap) is respectful, used with elders. तू (tu) is very intimate or very casual, and can be rude in the wrong context. With a partner it can feel affectionate; with a stranger it can feel disrespectful.
Pronunciation notes
pyaar: p-yaar, one syllable with a glide. The r is a light tap.
jaan: long aa, soft n. Not "jan".
