How to say good morning in Hindi
The textbook answer is सुप्रभात (suprabhaat), but honestly, most families do not say it out loud. Here is what people actually say when they walk into the kitchen at 8am.
The formal one you will see written
सुप्रभात
suprabhaat
Good morning (formal, mostly used in writing, on TV news, or in messages).
What families actually say
नमस्ते जी
namaste ji
Hello (with जी for warmth). Works morning, noon, or night with elders.
गुड मॉर्निंग
good morning
Yes, straight from English. Extremely common between friends and at work.
उठ गए?
uth gaye?
You're up? (casual, teasing, to a peer or younger sibling).
चाय पिओगे?
chai piyoge?
Will you have some chai? (the real morning greeting in many homes).
Pronunciation notes
suprabhaat: the bh is one sound (breathy b), not "b" then "h". Say "su-pra-bhaat" in three beats, with a long "aa" at the end.
uth gaye: the t in उठ is retroflex (tongue curls back and taps). It does not sound like an English t.
Say it with love
Adding जी (ji) to almost anything makes it warmer. Namaste ji, aap kaise ho? at breakfast with your partner's parents will land better than a stiff suprabhaat.
