How to say I don't understand in Hindi

This is the most valuable page on the site. The moment you can say you are lost, and ask for it slower, you stop needing to understand everything. You can stay in the room.

The line itself

mujhe samajh nahee~ aayaa
I didn't catch that
mujhe samajh nahee~ aa rahaa
I'm not following
maaf keejiye?
Sorry? (asking them to repeat)

Notice there is no मैं. Understanding is something that comes to you, so the person sits in the मुझे slot. Same shape as मुझे भूख लगी है and मुझे हिंदी आती है.

Asking for it again, slower

zaraa dheere boliye
A little slower, please
phir se kahiye
Say that again, please
ek baar aur?
One more time?

Asking what a word means

iskaa matlab kyaa hai?
What does this mean?
ise hindee me~ kyaa kahte hai~?
yah kaise bolte hai~?
How do you say this?

Explaining where you are

mujhe hindee thoRee thoRee aatee hai
mai~ seekh rahee hoo~
I'm learning (woman speaking)
mai~ seekh rahaa hoo~
I'm learning (man speaking)
aap angrezee bolte hai~?
Do you speak English?

मुझे हिंदी आती है is how Hindi says I know a language. The verb agrees with हिंदी, which is feminine, so it is आती whoever is speaking. Adding थोड़ी थोड़ी turns it into a little, and it buys you enormous patience from the person opposite.

Keeping the conversation open

Say one of these and most people will slow down, repeat themselves, and stay with you. Silence is what ends conversations, not mistakes. Being the person who asks is better than being the person who nods.

haa~, samajh gaee
Yes, got it (woman speaking)
haa~, samajh gayaa
Yes, got it (man speaking)
achchhaa!
Ah, I see (the all-purpose one)
