How to say how much is this in Hindi

One question does most of the work in a shop, and it has a small catch: the ending changes depending on what you are pointing at.

The question

यह कितने का है?
yah kitne kaa hai?
How much is this? (masculine thing)
यह कितने की है?
yah kitne kee hai?
How much is this? (feminine thing)
ये कितने के हैं?
ye kitne ke hai~?
How much are these?

का, की and के agree with the item, not with you. कुर्ता (kurtaa) is masculine, so कितने का. साड़ी (saaRee) is feminine, so कितने की. If you have no idea which one a thing is, point and say कितने का, and nobody will stop the sale over it.

Simpler versions when you are stuck

कितना?
kitnaa?
How much? (blunt but understood)
दाम क्या है?
daam kyaa hai?
What's the price?
कितना हुआ?
kitnaa huaa?
How much did that come to? (at the till)

Bargaining

बहुत महँगा है
bahut maha~gaa hai
That's very expensive
थोड़ा कम कीजिए
thoRaa kam keejiye
Bring it down a little, please
आख़िरी दाम क्या है?
aakhiree daam kyaa hai?
What's your final price?
रहने दीजिए
rahne deejiye
Leave it, then (the walk-away)

Bargaining is normal in a market and not done in a shop with printed price tags. The tone is friendly, not adversarial. रहने दीजिए said while turning away is the oldest move there is.

Choosing and paying

मुझे यह चाहिए
mujhe yah chaahiye
I'd like this one
ज़रा दिखाइए
zaraa dikhaaiye
Show me, please
बस इतना ही
bas itnaa hee
That's all
कार्ड चलेगा?
kaarD chalegaa?
Do you take card?
छुट्टा है?
chhuTTaa hai?
Do you have change?

The grammar worth keeping

मुझे यह चाहिए has no "I" in it. Wanting, needing, liking and knowing all put the person in the मुझे slot and let the thing be the subject. It is the single most useful pattern in the language: मुझे पानी चाहिए, मुझे चाय पसंद है, मुझे हिंदी आती है.
